Studying abroad is a dream most of us nurture. Amidst many documents we have to submit for student visa, statement of purpose or the letter of explanation is crucial. It took 2 months to finalize my SOP. Therefore, I’m sharing it with you so that you can speed up writing yours's.

Dear Sir/Madam,

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I, the undersigned, Hakmana Kodithuwakkuge Dulana Hansisi, am currently employed as a Business Solutions Engineer and I am 24 years old. I have received admission for the <name of the program> at <Name of the college or the university>, <city>, <Province> for <intake fall/winter/summer> 2022 intake. Therefore, with the hope of continuing postgraduate studies and grooming myself for the future, I am applying for a study permit to Canada.

After completing my G.C.E A/L’s in 2016 obtaining 1B and 2C’s, I enrolled myself for a BSc in Computer Science at the University of Westminster, UK (Teaching Institute: Informatics Institute of Technology, Sri Lanka) in 2016 and graduated with a First-Class Honors degree in 2020.

As an Undergraduate, I was enthralled by how easily real-life problems can be solved with the leverage of Computer Science, compelling me to study more on enterprise application development and innovation. The one-year long internship I did as a Trainee Software Engineer at <Company Name>, Sri Lanka (Service letter attached) helped me to improve my technical knowledge related to Software Development. Nurturing my passion towards Software Design and IT Business Analysis, and making use of the learnings of my internship, I embarked on my career as a Business Analyst with <Company Name>, a local Software Development company after completing my Bachelors where I worked 6 months full time (Service letter attached). Continuing my career, I am currently working as a Business Solutions Engineer (a Technical Business Analyst role), with <Company Name>, a multinational telecom software development company (Employment confirmation letter attached).

My ambition is to become a Lead IT Business Analyst, a profession that requires both expert IT and Business Management knowledge, and to contribute to the local IT industry in Sri Lanka with my expertise. To win over my ambition, I would like to fuse my IT industry working experience with the sublime IT Business Management knowledge that Canada provides.

Since the IT industry in my home country is growing exponentially, as an IT Professional, I see the dire necessity of having the latest knowledge and knowing the best practices to solve modern problems using cutting-edge technologies and novel IT infrastructures. Apart from the IT industry exposure, I have attained the PSM 1 (Professional Scrum Master 1, Credential ID: 511205) and CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner, Credential ID: 001136836) which are highly demanding credentials for IT Business Analysts globally.

As a professional who works in the business frontline, I’ve fathomed that being able to work in a diverse working environment opens up more career opportunities. Since I’ve completed my education up to Bachelors in my home country, I believe that continuing my postgraduate education abroad would be a prolific and prestigious experience as I get more chances to work with professionals who have come to continue their higher studies from different parts of the world.

I chose Canada because of its outstanding quality of education, affordable fees, international recognition, and multi-cultural society. The Business Analyst profession in the global arena is supported and standardized by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), a non-profit organization located in Ontario. As a Business Analyst, I adhere to the tools and the techniques which are mentioned in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) by IIBA. Therefore, internationally recognized Canadian Post Graduate <degree or diploma> provided by a Canadian public college, which is highly aligned with my professional domain will be an added advantage to my career back in Sri Lanka.

<College / University Name>was founded in <Year> and known as a well-reputed public College located in British Columbia. Providing world-class education for 46 years, <College / University Name> has well-versed alumni employed across the world. In fact, completing a multidisciplinary postgraduate diploma at <College / University Name>will help me to thrive in my career.

The 2-year long<name of the program> program I aspire to obtain at <Name of the college or the university> is unique, industry oriented and a well-recognized program that consists of 22 courses (62 credits in total) in prominent technical knowledge areas such as Business Systems Analysis & Design, Virtual Software Systems, Server Management, and IT Specialized Project Management, which Sri Lankan Universities can’t offer at the moment. Not only technical courses but also the program delivers Management skills for supervisors, Integrated Strategic Management, Principles of Corporate Finance, and Business Law courses which will help me to improve my management & leadership skills and Business Acumen. The number of courses and credit value this program provides is certainly greater than the number of courses and the credits in most of the MBA and MSc in IT programs provided by Sri Lankan Universities. I strongly believe that the importance of this particular graduate program, such as the experience of the faculty members, and the feasibility to enroll in relevant coursework will surely facilitate having a promising professional portfolio. Therefore, this qualification will help me gain a competitive edge, enabling me to pursue a successful career in Sri Lanka.

I am the only son of a nuclear family where I am living with my parents and the only sister. I will be funded by my parents being the primary sponsor for the payment of my tuition and expenses during my 2 years of stay in Canada from <Starting Month> <Starting Year> to <Ending Month> <Starting Year> (Sponsorship letter attached) helping me to focus solely on my studies. I will return to my home country upon the completion of my postgraduate program as all my family members, relatives, and our family properties are in Sri Lanka. My father will be retired in July 2023 and my mother will be retired in July 2025. Therefore, as the only Son of the family, I’ve commitments towards looking after my parents once they are retired and my parents also expect me to settle in the home country and take care of the family properties.

Further, Sri Lanka’s information technology and business process outsourcing sector tripled exports and doubled the workforce in a little over five years, from 2015 to 2020. The sector grew by 120 percent from 2015 to 2020 with current exports at over $1 billion, making it one of the highest growth areas in the economy and the fifth largest export segment. Sri Lanka’s IT/business process management sector envisions USD 5 billion in revenue, 200,000 direct jobs, and 1,000 start-ups by 2022 as per International Trade Administration. Therefore, on successful completion of my <name of the program>, fast-tracking my career, I would be able to move onto the position of a Senior Technical Business Analyst / Associate Lead IT Business Analyst at a reputed IT company in Sri Lanka which will ultimately pave my way to become a Lead IT Business Analyst with another 2–3 years of working experience, where the average annual salary for the above role is in the range of 4 million rupees (CAD 25000) which I seek this education as a high yielding investment which has profuse returns in the long term.

Trust you will find my documents in proper order, and I kindly request you to process my visa application at your earliest, to avail myself at <University/College name>. Thank you for your time and I would gladly provide any clarification if needed.

Thanking you!

Yours Sincerely,

<Name and the signature>

You can use the key points I’ve mentioned and stick to the same template I used. Anyway, don’t copy paste as it can badly reflect on your visa.

Good Luck !!!

Let’s make the global industry better.
