As an Intern
- Getting a suitable internship.
Internship is for you. Not for the organization. You might work on main projects, but your purpose should be learning and organization’s intention should also be nurturing you. On the organization’s perspective, internships are an easy way of recruiting people and pumping new blood to the organization.(Believe me.I’m a HR Student as well). You should mind that when you are searching for internships. Look for the strength of the organization. Do your homework and figure out whether there is a possibility of an employment after being graduated, or continuing your career at the same place. And you should have to have a clear cut idea on what you want from the internship. As an example, as a Computer Game Development undergraduate, an internship on web development doesn’t add value to my career. So pick the place wisely.
2) Make peace with your mentor.
After getting selected, a senior person will be appointed as your immediate supervisor. He/She will be your guardian, and the mentor. Mentoring is all about guiding with a good faith. Mentoring is a two way route. You have to respect your mentor and in return, your mentor will guide you. But don’t hesitate to question and argue in a good way. Sometimes your mentor will shout at you. But be patient. They do have so many critical works to be done. Same time they have to allocate time for you as well. That’s not easy. So mind to be patient.
3) Focus on lesson. You will learn from mistakes.
In my personal experience, I had learnt so many theoretical parts of subjects from the institute. But nothing was used in the internship. But the good practices were continue to use like adding some comments on each piece of code. You will be exposed into new technologies.Hence it is norm we do mistakes. But learn from the mistakes. What organization seeks from you is your ability to learn new things immediately. Better you know, literacy in 21st century is Learn, Unlearn and Relearn. Don’t despair. There are overwhelming ways of doing one thing . So find it. Get help from seniors. It is your responsibility to learn. Spoon feeding will not take place in the industry.
4) Work Hard. You are young.
You should be grateful for having an internship. It’s a treasure. Now a days, candidates have to go through interviews to get an internship. If you are selected, it simply means that you are a right pick for the company. So don’t try to spoil their faith on you. Take part in common activities, network as much as you can, have fun. But be committed to your work. Don’t say I can’t without giving a try(I used to say ‘I can’t do this and that’. Then my great Supervisor said me that and that words gave me a new dimension to see the world).
5) If someone say “You can’t”. Prove them wrong.
No matter how good you are, how nice you are. People judge you. They hit you by their ulterior motives. Listen, Nod your head, Gesture like you accept them. Do what you want. Pursue your goals and objectives.
Best Wishes !!! This is your one life. Don’t waste it. Don’t say You can’t without giving a try.
